Reactive Dog Field Tips

Your Reactive Dog Deserves A Space Built For Them. Most dog fields aren't built with your dog in mind. Here's how to make every session work — and where to find the space that actually does.

WE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOUR WALKS LOOK LIKE.

Scanning 200 metres ahead before you'll unclip the lead. Crossing the road to avoid a stranger's dog. Apologising to people who don't understand. Watching your dog shut down — or go off — and feeling powerless to stop it.

Reactive dogs aren't bad dogs. They're often the most sensitive, intelligent, and loyal dogs there are. They just need the right environment.

Most public spaces weren't designed for reactive dogs. The park, the common, the beach — all unpredictable. The solution isn't more training in those places. It's finding a space where the triggers simply don't exist.

How To Make Any Field Session Work For Your Reactive Dog

These are the field strategies that actually move the needle — drawn from canine behaviour science and the experience of thousands of reactive dog owners.

  1. 1.

    Arrive Below Threshold

Let your dog sniff the gate area for 60–90 seconds before entering. A dog who arrives calm can learn; one already aroused can't.

  2. 2.

Let Them Sniff Before They Move

Make the first five minutes all nose. Sniffing activates the parasympathetic nervous system and calms your dog before any training.

  3. 3.

    Use The Fence Line Strategically

Walk the perimeter first. A predictable boundary tells your dog this space has edges — nothing unknown can appear from any angle.

  4. 4.

    Off-Lead Is The Point

A lead creates opposition reflex — tension travels up the line into your dog's stress. In a fully enclosed field, you can drop it.

  5. 5.

    Parallel Play Through The Fence

Working on dog-dog reactivity? A secure perimeter lets you do controlled parallel walking with a neutral dog at a safe distance.

  6. 6.

End On A Win — Always

Don't run sessions too long. The moment your dog has a positive interaction — running free without reacting — that's your close.

  7. 7.

Use The Indoor Barn In Winter

Bad weather doesn't pause a reactive dog's needs. Our 162sqm private indoor barn at Eight Ash Green keeps sessions warm and dry.

  8. 8.

    Book During Quieter Windows

Early morning and mid-week daytime slots have the quietest approach routes. The session is private — and so is the journey in.

  9. 9.

    Track Progress Session By Session

After each session, note what worked and what didn't. Reactivity progress isn't linear, but the pattern only shows if you track it.

What Reactive Dog Owners Say

Real feedback from real owners who found a better way.

He ran his little heart out. For a dog who's never had that kind of freedom before — it meant everything. No other dogs, no strangers, just us and the field.

Louise, Upminster

Reactive rescue lurcher

Finally somewhere I can let my dog off the lead without the anxiety. The fencing is high and secure. The double gate gives us time to get sorted before we're actually inside. Absolutely perfect for our boy.

Kat K, Upminster

Reactive German Shepherd

We have a dog who lunges at anything that moves. Foxes Farm Fields has been the only place in Essex where I've been able to watch her actually be a dog. The difference in her after a field session is remarkable.

Sarah T, Basildon

Dog-reactive Staffie cross

The indoor barn has been a game-changer through winter. No mud, no wind, no chance of a surprise encounter in the car park. Our behaviourist recommended private fields as part of our desensitisation protocol — this is exactly that.

Mark & Jess, Colchester

Why Private Is The Only Answer For Reactive Dogs

Public parks are unpredictable by design. Another dog appears from behind a bush. A child runs full speed toward your dog. A cyclist appears from nowhere. Each of those moments undoes weeks of careful, patient work.

Private enclosed fields eliminate the variable. Every session is a controlled environment — the only controlled environment most reactive dog owners will ever have access to.

No other dogs can enter during your session. Not one.

  • Double-gated entry means safe transitions in and out
  • High perimeter fencing removes the visual trigger of passing dogs
  • Booking app lets you choose quieter time slots
  • Works alongside any professional behaviour programme
  • Indoor barn available for weather-independent year-round sessions

We Built This For Our Own Dog. Then For Yours.

We're Guy and Emily French. Essex farmers, dog owners, and the founders of Foxes Farm Fields. We had hundreds of acres and nowhere safe to let our miniature dachshund, Fudge, run free without that stomach-knot feeling.

The first time she tore across a fenced field with zero worry — for us and for her — was the moment we knew this needed to exist for every dog owner in Essex who felt the same way.

Reactive dog owners were among the very first people to find us, and the feedback from that community is what drove us to build 12 fields and a barn. We're not done.
