Private Dog Field Walks Before Christmas: A Calmer Run Up for You and Your Dog
The countdown to Christmas has started. The decorations are coming down from the loft, the shopping list is growing and the diary is filling up with visits, parties and school events.
For your dog, all of that means change. New smells, new people, a tree in the living room and a routine that slips a little more each week. Most dogs cope best when they have had a proper run, and the weeks before Christmas are exactly when that run is hardest to find.
Starting a simple walking habit now, while there is still time, is one of the kindest things you can do for your dog before the big day.
Why Walks Get Harder as Christmas Gets Closer
The dark evening squeezes everything. With the sun setting before 4pm in December, the after work walk happens in the dark, and the safe daylight hours are crowded into the weekend.
The pavement loop takes over. When time is short, the same lead walk round the same streets becomes the default. It ticks the box, but it never lets your dog stretch out and run.
Then there is the surprise dog. Weekend walks fill up with visiting families and their dogs, and it only takes one off lead dog bounding over, with someone calling "he's friendly", to undo a whole walk's worth of calm.
For many owners it adds up to the walk you dread. Scanning ahead, shortening the lead, turning back early. A dog with nervous energy at home, and a quiet feeling that they deserve more.
Every dog deserves somewhere to run without worrying, and Christmas is no exception.
Practical Tips for a Calm Dog Before Christmas
- Start now, not in the last week. Building 2 or 3 good runs a week into November makes December much easier.
- Plan walks around daylight. Weekend mornings and lunchtimes give you the best light and the calmest conditions.
- Introduce changes slowly. Put the tree up and let your dog have a sniff before it is decorated.
- Give your dog a quiet space. A bed or crate in a calm room, away from the busiest part of the house, gives them somewhere to retreat.
- Have a word with your guests. Ask visitors not to feed your dog from the table and to let your dog come to them.
- Walk before visitors arrive. A good run before the doorbell starts ringing helps a dog settle.
- Keep festive food and wrapped presents out of reach. Chocolate, grapes, raisins and mince pies are all harmful to dogs.
What Is at Stake for You and Your Dog This Christmas
If nothing changes, your dog heads into the busiest week of the year with energy to burn and nowhere to put it. Barking at the door, jumping at guests, pacing while everyone is trying to relax. You spend the holidays managing your dog instead of enjoying them.
If it does change, your dog arrives at Christmas well walked and settled. A proper run in the morning, a calm hello for visitors, and a long nap under the table while lunch is served. You get to enjoy the day too.
How Foxes Farm Fields Can Help
We know what it feels like when the walk becomes one more thing to worry about in a busy December. We fenced our first field for our own dog in 2019, because we needed somewhere safe for her to run.
Today you will find our private fields in Basildon, Upminster, Great Bromley, Eight Ash Green and Colne Engaine. When you book, your field is yours alone for the session, so there is no other dog in your field. Every field has double gated entry, and there is a buffer between bookings so you won't meet anyone at your gate.
Getting a calm, proper run into your week is simple:
- Pick your field.
- Book a slot online.
- Open the gate and unclip the lead.
Enclosed field sessions start from £10 for 25 minutes, and 55 minute sessions start from £13, depending on the field and the day. Our Upminster leaded trail starts from £7 and is always walked on lead.
Picture Christmas morning with a dog who ran their heart out the day before, now stretched out by the tree while the presents are opened.
And if there is a dog owner on your Christmas list, our Merry Woofmas gift vouchers make an easy present. Choose from £5, £10, £20, £50 or £100. They are sent by email straight away and can be used at any of our fields for 12 months.
